Neal to pave the way for Raiders; running backs
The signing of fullback Lorenzo Neal probably won;t find many headlines, but the four-time Pro Bowler is an underrated addition to the ; backfield. The running game carried the Raider offense a year ago and a bulldozing lead blocker will only improve Oakland;s rushing attack in 2009.With the Raiders; 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey black jersey
offensive line still developing, the addition of Neal provides stability to an already sufficient running game in Oakland. Even while averaging an NFL-worst 148 yards per contest through the air, the Raiders mustered up 124 yards per game rushing in '08. As things continue to gel in the trenches along with quarterback JaMarcus Russell;s progression, Neal;s presence in the backfield could do wonders this season.In addition to blocking for numerous 1,000-yard rushers, Neal has been extremely reliable during the course of his 16-year career. Since appearing in just two games during his rookie season of 1993, Neal has missed only three games over the next 15 years. His consistency and experience should help the likes of Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush.Most recently, Neal found a home with the Baltimore Ravens, albeit for just one season. However, in 2008 the Ravens relied heavily on their running game with rookie signal-caller Joe Flacco at the helm. Baltimore racked up nearly 150 yards per game on the ground, good for fourth best in the NFL. On the legs of their rushing attack, the Ravens advanced to the AFC championship game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to his one-year stint with Baltimore, Neal spent five seasons with the San Diego Chargers. It;s no coincidence that perennial Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson;s best years came with Neal leading the way. After Neal left San Diego following the 2007 season, Tomlinson had the worst output of his career. He managed only 1,110 yards after averaging 1,546 yards per season with Neal as his backfield partner.While Neal;s best playing days are certainly behind him, he;ll still be quite valuable to a talented Raiders running back corps. Oakland has all facets of the running game covered with a three-headed monster at the position. McFadden is a classic home run threat who can score any time he touches the ball. Meanwhile, Fargas2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
is a balanced and steady runner while Bush has the potential to become a bruiser between the tackles.The signing of Neal will have more than just an impact on the playing field, too. He;ll be able to mentor a relatively young group of players and provide leadership in the Raiders; room. Furthermore, with a history of success wherever he;s played, Oakland is hopeful Neal's good fortune will rub off on the once-proud franchise that;s fallen on hard times.

"(Overweight?) JaMarcus Russell getting comfortable with receivers"
quarterback JaMarcus Russell must be eating brain food. One source says he;s gaining weight; another source thinks he;s become a smarter player on the field.Contra Costa Times beat writer Jerry McDonald has noticed one change in the 23-year-old QB thus far: his weight. Russell was listed in the 260-pound 4 Brett Favre White jersey
region last season, but has been no stranger to substantial weight fluctuations in his short NFL career. According to McDonald, he;s looking less and less like a QB this offseason.;Russell, as least with the Raiders, has not been a well-cut athlete and his body-type looks more like some of the offensive linemen than a quarterback,; McDonald wrote last week.There;s better news coming from inside Oakland;s locker room, though.Third-year wideout Johnnie Lee Higgins thinks Russell -- extra weight or not -- is becoming more in-tune with his offense. Higgins sees improvements in Russell;s pre-snap reads and in his overall timing with the offense.;He is looking more into the defense,; Higgins said on Sunday. ;He is talking to us more and we are just getting the timing together.;If Higgins isn;t stretching the truth, that;s a good early sign for Oakland. More than ever, Russell needs to be confident in his young wide receivers this season, especially Higgins.To say last season was an off-year for the wide receivers in Oakland would be a massive understatement. The top wideout on the roster was Higgins. That doesn;t say much, though, because he probably would;ve been the fourth-best pass catcher on any other NFL squad. The 185-pounder had just 22 grabs for 366 yards and four TDs, ahead of any other wide receiver by 140 yards. Only Higgins and fellow youngster Chaz Schilens had over 200 yards receiving on the season.Despite an expectedly bolstered run game, Oakland can;t afford to field another last-ranked (148.1 yards per game) pass attack in 2009. Team owner Al Davis and second-year head coach Tom Cable are banking on speed to make all the difference this upcoming season.;Coach said the slowest time among the receivers is a 4.33 in a 40-yard dash so there is just more speed and ability there,; Higgins said this week.Very controversial first-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey is a huge part of the equation. The 22-year-old recorded the fastest 40 time among all receivers in 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
the draft, clocking in at 4.3 seconds.;We just want to keep on pushing,; Higgins added. ;We ended the year really great and we just have to keep making plays whether you are a receiver, running back, tight end, or quarterback.;;It;s like a big brotherhood. We are helping everyone get better.;

Diehard Fans
Thus far, the offseason in Oakland has been a rather monotonous time for fans. True fans, however, watch their team closely despite long, drawn out periods of inactivity. But, besides this, there are several other ways to tell if you are a "true Raider."Here are the top ten:1. You own more makeup than your wifeIf you have a lockbox containing cover up, eye liner, and lipstick in shades of silver and black, you are a Raider. If it takes you longer on the weekend to put on your makeup than your significant other, you are a hardcore Raider. If you wear makeup during the course of the week, you are sitting alone at the game.2. Tim Duncan plays for the Raiders, followed by the San Antonio SpursIf you are a Raider, when you hear the name "Tim Duncan" come from somebody's mouth, you immediately think to yourself: Kicker, 6'2", 209 pounds out of Arizona. You then later on realize that they were talking about the San Antonio Spurs' All-Star center and then ponder how much you love the Spurs' colors.3. When someone calls you a "poor sap," you smile back and think of big 99If a friend refers to you as a "poor sap," you don't think you are a pitiful fool. Instead, you are an underpaid defensive tackle for the . And heck, you are part of the Raiders, so it doesn't matter how poor you are-this is a flattering compliment.4. You think the Pope is John Paul FoschiYou sit back wondering how John Paul Foschi regularly flies from Rome, Italy to Oakland, California without any complaints. You then say a quick prayer to Pope John Paul Foschi before watching the Monday Night matchup between the Raiders and Broncos匶ou are a Raider.5. You don't know what the 2006 Mitsubishi Raider looks like, but you are saving up for it anywayAll you know is that the 2006 Mitsubishi Raider is a midsize pickup truck that starts at about $20,000. Because of the name, you save up all of your earnings and purchase the vehicle in black and slap on a Raiders' bumper sticker. Later on, you realize that it gets just seven miles to the gallon in the city. But because of the name, you plan on purchasing the same automobile in 2007.6. A Badger is an offensive guard before a burrowing animalYou go to the zoo and anxiously await your arrival to the badger exhibit. Soon after, you realize it's just a small, brown animal with a bushy tail. You throw your zoo map to the ground and then storm the admission gate for a full refund.7. You can correctly spell Brad LekkerkerkerIf you closely examined the above name and nodded your head in consent, you are a Raider.8. Speedy Gonzales is a banned cartoon in your householdBecause the fast, foreign mouse has a name that closely resembles that of the despised tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Mexican animation is a forbidden character in your family circle. This is enforced through extensive planned programming and collective cable channel charts. Your children wonder why the name "Gonzalez" is so evil; you tell them he started World War III and then leave the room quickly in a deep sweat.9. You watch NFL Europe just to see Anttaj Hawthorne playYou order a pizza on Saturday and sit down to watch the Frankfurt Galaxy battle it out with the Hamburg Sea Devils. You may think the ball can legally be caught off the bounce-but still, Anttaj Hawthorne is in at defensive tackle. When the 6'2", 310 pounder pushes over an opposing offensive lineman, you cheer like the Raiders won another playoff game against the NY Jets.10. You have two sons; their names are Marcus and AllenYou really wanted to name your two boys Napoleon and Kaufman, but feared for their grammar school lives. So instead, you settled for a less-favorable Marcus and Allen.Are you a true Raider?

Green Bay Packers matchup not terribly unequal
At first glance, Sunday's meeting between the 4-8 and 10-2 Green Bay Packers appears to be a rather lopsided one. One team is on its way to the playoffs, the other is fighting to stay afloat in a weak 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
division.Looking a bit closer, however, it isn't all that bad for Oakland.The Raiders are 10?-point underdogs heading into the contest at Lambeau Field this week. Only the Lions, who are hosting Dallas, are a bigger long shot to win in Week 14.Still -- at least on paper -- the Raiders may give Green Bay a run for its money.Oakland is coming off two consecutive wins over divisional opponents, in which the offense has put over 50 points on the board. Green Bay, on the other hand, is rebounding from a 10-point loss on the road against the Cowboys -- a game in which quarterback Brett Favre missed more than half because of a bruised right elbow and separated left shoulder.Unluckily for Oakland, Favre is expected to start his 250th consecutive game this weekend, extending a streak that began on Sept. 27, 1992. Raiders rookie QB JaMarcus Russell was 8 years old at the time.Despite the return of Favre to the Packers' offense, the Raiders should still be able to shake up Green Bay at home.Oakland's Achilles' heel this season has been its inability to stop the run. The Raider 'D' ranks 30th in rush yards against, allowing 148.0 each game. This season, Oakland has allowed eight different rushers to surpass the 100-yard mark, including three backups (Ron Dayne, Chester Taylor and Kolby Smith).However, on the other side of the football, Green Bay fields an equally ineffective rushing attack.The Packers also rank 30th in the category, and they gain just 85.3 yards on the ground each outing. Rookie halfback Ryan Grant has supplied a much-needed boost to the bottom-ranked unit, averaging 93.5 yards a game since Week 8. However, as a team, Green Bay still averages just 105.0 yards with Grant running the ball, still placing the Pack in the bottom half of the league.The strength of the Packers this season has been the Favre-led pass attack, which ranks second in the NFL. With receiving weapons Donald Driver and Greg Jennings by his side, Favre and the Packers throw for 293.1 yards per game. As a result, they put up a fifth-ranked 26.9 points per contest.The Raiders, though, are no pushover when it comes to defending the pass. Oakland ranked first in pass defense in '06 and, despite a slow start this season, currently ranks fifth in the category. The Rob Ryan-led secondary allows just 186.1 passing yards this year; last year, the group surrendered 150.8 yards.For Oakland, Sunday's game could be kept very close down to the final seconds with a few big plays Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
from the defense. With linebackers Thomas Howard and Kirk Morrison on the field, and cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha, Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt roaming the secondary, that's very possible.The oddsmakers say the Raiders are major underdogs. However, don't be too surprised if that opinion doesn't show up in the final score.
